A new EHR

We are in the process of looking for a new EHR  system.  The current system has several flaws and inadequate elements.  We have evaluated 3 different systems.  These are commercially available.  some are connected to the Internet,  others are not.  I have given my input on what characteristics I think should be considered.   We need a system that communicates with other systems at hospitals, and clinics.   It needs to have interface with Radiology systems in the area.   We want the ability to have electronic prescription capability.  The system we like the best has some flexibility with it.  We can design some of the templates, and charts which would be specific to our practice.  I have given my input for these as well. .
I will be involved in helping train the medical assistants in data entry, and other needful aspects in which they participate.  I am excited to see our new system.   The down side is that these systems are extremely expensive, and they incur yearly costs as well as start up costs.  The company feels that the costs are recovered within a year due to savings in time, paper, errors, and lost information.

  1. Jean, keep plugging a long. Get the expensive system. It will meet more of your needs. Easy for me to say... I don't have to pay for it!

  2. Hi Mary,
Yes, EHRs are a huge thing now and most of them have issues and that is why it is important that they be evaluated for usability. Being a super trainer and involved in the implementation is an excellent approach in participating in the implementation. You will find that you will not only be an expert in the system but also contribute a lot in improving the system through your feedback.
