Retriving information
I used PubMed for my electronic index. It is extremely useful and indispensable for doing a literature search. The terms must be refined, using the MESH index before success is realized. Not all terms are recognized by the MESH index. Correlates must be identified, and once you find the right grouping of terms, success can be realized. The guideline index was somewhat less useful. The National Guideline Clearing House is useful If you are looking for practice guidelines. In my case, I was looking for recent research in my area of interest. There were a lot of hits on Goolge search, but many of them were not properly referenced. A Google search does give links to the government web sites such as SAMSHA, or DAWN. The government actually has a lot published about my topic of interest. (drug abuse and diversion). I have not seen the government publications referenced in PubMed as often as I have found them on the internet. Maybe that is my inadequate search capabilities. I am also finding useful references in the criminal justice literature, and that is not referenced by PubMed. The criminal justice website are easily found using Google.

Excellent points Mary, yes as you have discovered it may be easier to refine your searches in engines like PubMed that are dedicated to research publications. Google provides good information by may require extra work in refining, checking references and sources.
