Teaching in my professional role
Teaching is done at every patient encounter. I teach about the importance of managing hypertension, eating a healthy diet, losing weight, quitting smoking, and getting adequate sleep. I teach patients about their disease states, the pharmacology of their drugs, and where to go for more information. I cannot think of a health care provider role that does not involve teaching in some manner. If a DNP decides to work for a research company, there is still teaching involved, because they are used in a clinical manner in these corporate roles, usually as a liason between subjects and researchers. DNP's are trained to be teachers, providers, and support persons. They are not trained as researchers. I therefore, think we must remember that our role as teacher may increase as we progress from MSN prepared to DNP prepared health care providers.

Good comments Mary, I like your heading. Yes, even in research teaching is involved. Nursing researchers do a lot of theaching, for example when they publish their findings they are teaching.
